Ever had one of those days when … damn, just, damn. It’s usually not big stuff, just petty little things that have a really annoying tendency to stack up one on top of the other.
And then ever been telling someone how crap you day has been and they say something like, “oh well, at least you have your health” or the even more trite “every cloud has a silver lining.” Mostly they’re just trying to stop you from whining, but all those old sayings tend to have a nugget of truth buried in them. In this case looking for the positive is actually a really a good idea.
Whatever we focus on and think about is what we attract into our lives. Most people go through their day on auto-think; basically they’re reacting to what’s happening around them and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s the attitude that we bring to what we’re noticing that makes all the difference.
For instance, you spill the milk when you’re making your breakfast and have to get changed before going to work. That makes you late, so now you’re rushing, and then someone cuts you off in traffic. You’re feeling stressed, annoyed and frustrated and the next thing that happens just compounds those feelings. Progressively you day could get worse and worse, until you finally get home, only to have an argument with your partner or children. We’ve all had them; they’re just one of those days.
It may seem like these things are just happening to you but in reality its your reaction to the event that’s creating the ongoing drama in your day. Sometime during the day you probably even said “I’m having one of those days”, which acknowledges and perpetuates the drama. You can change the course of the day by changing your attitude to what happens. Yes it’s annoying to spill something but maybe there is an upside. Maybe your outfit was just not working for you. Maybe being cut off in traffic was a blessing because it got that dangerous driver out of your sphere. The point is if you see something positive in the situation you can change your internal feelings and it will change the way the day plays out.
The way to do that is gratitude. Gratitude is a positive, rejoicing emotion and it has a profound impact on our lives; hence all those old sayings. If we’re grateful for what we already have in our life then we feel good, and feeling good is the emotion that attracts good stuff to us. Actively looking for things to be grateful for, and there are always things to be grateful for, will actually bring more and more things into your life to be grateful for. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy of the best kind.
So, I had a really crappy morning, stupid cat, but I’ve decided that it’s not going to be a difficult day. I’m going to see Harry Potter this evening and I’m very grateful for that. I have a busy day ahead and I’m grateful for that (I hate sitting around doing nothing at work) and yes, I’m tired, but, hey, I have my health and I’m very grateful for that.
Have a great day!
Lisa
