Yesterday I let loose about the idiocy of taking children away from a loving, supportive home because they’re fat. Some people would argue that if a child is fat then the home is not loving and supportive. That’s ridiculous and shows a complete lack of understanding of obesity itself, dynamics of families and the damage being done to psyches.
It’s so annoying that some people find out a little information about something, decide their opinion on the subject, then defend that position against all comers. Actually, I don’t even have a problem with that. I think that everyone is entitled to their opinion, and, well good luck to you.
What really bothers me is when they try and foist that opinion onto everyone else as if they’re “right” and everyone who doesn’t agree is “wrong”.
What seems to be different about me is that I don’t feel any particular need to have other people agree with me in order to believe in my own opinions. Sure I’m putting my ideas out there, and I’m doing that to be heard, to offer a different viewpoint, and support to those who are thinking in the same direction, but frankly I don’t give a damn whether you agree with me or not. Each to their own.
But then someone comes up with such a colossally stupid idea like taking children from their homes because they’re fat. I just am so shocked that someone would ever consider that to be a good idea. The ramifications seem so obvious, and so glaringly huge for all of society, not just the families it happens to. That people would consider ignoring all of that simply because they want to punish fat people is just immense.
The fact that it was an idea in the US and was picked up and played on Australian national news is disturbing as all hell.
This is wrong and part of the reason I started blogging on this subject. We need voices, lots and lots of voices offering different view points, different ways of dealing with this “obesity crisis” that offers support and help for those who are being victimized and a whisper of sanity against the constant barrage of negativity that’s currently shaping popular opinion.
Those voices are out there and I think that I would like to find them, and join them. Whatever I can do to help is probably not much but I believe this is wrong. It’s harmful to everyone.
Damn. I want to be a blogger not an activist. Crap. Just … crap.
