Day 6: Reject what makes you feel bad
I’m actively trying to change my awareness of my own thoughts and ideas about my health and well being at the moment and consequently I’m hyper aware of images I’m consuming.
I’ve been watching Burn Notice season one over the weekend. For those who don’t know the show is about a disavowed spy trying to make his way in Miami at the same time as he’s investigating the abrupt ending of his career. Its not exactly thought provoking stuff but it is mildly entertaining and the characters are OK.
The show is set in Miami. I’ve never been to Miami but I spend a lot of time on Pinterest and you’d have to live in a cave not to know its a gorgeous place with amazing beaches, beautiful architecture and a diverse and interesting mix of cultures.
It’d be hard to get that from Burn Notice though because from the footage Miami appears to be over run with bikini clad girls. Or their butts at least. Apparently lots and lots of pictures of thin girls bottoms is what qualifies as a signifier of Miami these days.
When the hell did women become part of the landscape? In the first instance its incredibly dehumanising to treat women as just something to look at.
In the second instance do the producers not realise how much of a turn off it is for women who might want to watch the show? To constantly have sexualised images of other women thrust in their face? It’s a very clear indication that this show is for men. And men only. Which immediately alienates half of their potential target audience. Seems like stupidity to me.
Ironically I live in the Australian version of Miami and the funny thing is there are a lot of bikini clad babes wandering around. There are also lots of their very fine counterparts, the hunky, bronzed surfy, a breed that’s completely missing from Burn Notice. Along with Asians, black people and old people, young people, fat people and just regular sized people and a whole shit load of tourists. All of whom are missing from Burn Notice, which apparently takes place in a world peopled by hot girls wearing bikinis. Excuse me, hot girls bums.
I get that TV is fantasy, but seriously, does it have to be the fantasy of some over privileged white dude with an immature desire to look at women’s butts? That’s not my fantasy.
This is the shit that you need to take with a grain of salt because frankly it’s lame, lazy and just plain reinforcing that women are a marginal part of society. Bullshit man. We’re 50% of the population; start catering to us with your mildly entertaining shows and at least include some hot guys in fuck all clothes.
