When I quit my day job I spent some time thinking about what sort of work I could do that wouldn’t drive me crazy.
I hated the whole 8.30am to 5.00pm hours. It was just too demanding and the whole day was eaten up by work. I’d start getting ready at 7.00pm and then add travelling time it would be 5.30pm before I got home. It works out a lot more than eight hours.
So ideally speaking I want to work less hours.
But … part of the reason I got a job in the first place was to get a mortgage, and you know, be able to pay it off and everything, so I do need to work a fair number of hours. 30 sounds great to me. Part time but still with a fairly solid income.
I also hated that I had little to do, and what I did have to do was only part of the whole. I didn’t dislike the work I had to do so much as there wasn’t enough of it to keep me busy and there was no real closure to what I did do.
Ideally speaking I would like work where I could set goals, work towards those goals and see and outcome. And have my own area where I’m responsible. I can be in charge of my own little “department” and service my customers.
I miss being on the road. I used to travel around the local area going from job to job. It could a pain at times, what with the heat and all but it broke up the day and made my work a lot more interesting. So something variable would be ideal.
Plus, nice people – my last boss was an Ass, with a capital A. That bad. Say no more.
I just went for a job interview with two very nice men. They have a number of small businesses they run, all in different locations around the area. I would need to travel to those locations during the week.
They would like me to work 30 hours, but if there’s no work go home. They’re completely flexible about when and how.
And they’re about two minutes from home.
Now that is a perfect example of synchronicity.
